Course description

An introductory course for those who want to find out whether a career in the Mechanical Engineering industry is the right fit for them. It is ideally suited for students who aspire to apprenticeships in the Engineering industry and related areas. It is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work safely and to utilise a range of techniques and processes to solve engineering related challenges. This course will also enable students to also develop life skills including effective communication techniques, teamwork and independent learning.

This is a daytime course (Monday – Friday), school hours, from Mid-September to April (8 months). One day per week will be in the work setting.

Work Placement

Work experience is a core element of this Pre apprenticeship program and we will assist you to secure work experience. Many Graduates obtain employment as a result of their work experience placement. Work placement is arranged in professional Engineering firms.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be considered. If the Leaving Certificate has been completed, details should be submitted with your application. Mature learners may be exempt from the academic requirements. First round offers will be made in May to all eligible applicants with subsequent offers made in September.

Course Certification

This course provides graduates with a QQI Level 5 certificate in Engineering Technology 5M2061


Graduates of this course fulfil the minimum requirements to be registered as an Apprentice in any of the Engineering disciplines. There is a strong demand locally for manufacturing, Metal and Tool Fabricating apprentices.
Through the QQI FET Links Scheme-Graduates can apply entry to Year 1 of related courses in the Engineering area in Universities and in Institutes of Technology with continuity of SUSI grant / BTEI if applicable. Examples of linked courses including:
