Course description

This one year* programme, validated by QQI, is designed for learners to prepare for an apprenticeship as a IT Associate Professional in Software Development or Networking. Students will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of information technology, programming and networking.

This course will introduce the learner to the skills necessary to implement and support PC systems and networks and design, develop and apply software solutions to support business activity. Successful graduates of the course can look forward to a rewarding and challenging career in this rapidly expanding field.

*This is a daytime course (Monday – Friday), school hours, from Mid-September to April (8 months). One day per week will be in the work setting.

Work Placement

Work experience is a core element of this Pre apprenticeship program and we will assist you to secure work experience. Many Graduates obtain employment as a result of their work experience placement. Work placement is arranged in professional ICT firms.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be considered. If the Leaving Certificate has been completed, details should be submitted with your application. Mature learners may be exempt from the academic requirements. First round offers will be made in May to all eligible applicants with subsequent offers made in September.

Course Certification

This course provides graduates with a QQI Level 5 Information processing major award 5M2067.


Graduates of this course fulfil the minimum requirements to be registered as an IT Associate Professional Apprentice and train in one of the Leading IT companies as a Network Technician or a Software Developer.
Through the QQI FET Links Scheme-Graduates can apply entry to Year 1 of related courses in the IT area in Universities and many Business and other courses in Institutes of Technology with continuity of SUSI grant / BTEI if applicable. Examples of linked courses including:
