It is also suitable for participants who want to support a child with learning difficulties in education.
This certified minor award will equip you with the knowledge, skill and competency in the practices and principles underpinning the role of Special Needs Assistant to enable you to work effectively under direction in a special needs capacity as part of a Major award in a related area.
Learners will be required to undertake Garda Clearance and 30 hours work experience in a school setting.

- Unit 4: Relating to other Stakeholders
- Unit 5: Special Needs Assisting Skills
Assessment
This course is assessed through a number of assignments:
- Skills Demonstration – 60%
This Skills Demonstration is divided into two sections:
Section 1 – the learner will be required to demonstrate their knowledge with regard to working with those who have a special need.
Section 2 – the learner will be assessed on the practical elements of working with those who have special needs. For this section the learner will be marked by their supervisor and they must give a description of the tasks they were involved in.
Learners are required to compile a learner record which must be drawn from experiences and challenges they faced in their work placement.
It must include reflections on their experiences and challenges, an examination of the values associated with working in the special needs environment and identify their personal learning and development.
Learners must complete all assignments to demonstrate their understanding of the various topics covered throughout the course.
